Hearts Flooded With Light

"I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance." Ephesians 1:18 NLT

We tend to think understanding comes first from our heads— our reasoning and ability to comprehend. Yet before we can “understand the confident hope” we have in Jesus, we should first pray for “hearts flooded with light”. Other versions use the word “enlightened” and “eyes of your heart.” The heart always comes first.

Paul prays that believers would not have a merely sliver of light to struggle through the darkness, but rather a flood of light that would fill every space of belief and vanish every trace of doubt. In such an “enlightened” space, where all is laid bare to see, only then does the mind have a chance to fully embrace and comprehend the magnificent truth of all we have in our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Lord, you are the only source of light. I need you to help me in my unbelief and light up those areas of doubt. Chase them away, just as darkness flees before light, so I may fully know you are Lord — first in my heart, then in my mind— and enable me to take hold of all You have for me as a child of Yours.
